At an evening conference Sony lifted the lid on the new PlayStation, the PS4, and it’s practically the antithesis to Microsoft’s Xbox One.
Directly opposing the controversy surrounding the new Microsoft console, Sony’s PS4 will allow pre-owned games, and disc-based purchases will be able to be traded in or lent to friends and family, with no draconian rules governing your rights. In fact, Sony even poked a bit of fun at the Xbox One’s overly complex and vague rules with a short video.
The PS4 will also be a winner in the always-on connection row, as it won’t need to connect online for any form of authentication. However, Sony has taken a little leaf out of Microsoft’s book, and you’ll now need to pay for PlayStation Plus if you want to play multiplayer games. This is a move many saw coming since the premium service’s inception. Free access will still be present, and will still allow content download, much like Xbox Live’s setup.
Indie developers will be happy to know that they can self-publish their titles on PSN, which will no doubt keep attracting more and more to the platform.
The Gaikai service, which Sony is using for backward compatibility will launch in the US in 2014, and will begin its life with various high profile PS3 titles.
Various launch titles were also announced, including Infamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Drive Club and Knack, along with newly announced title, The Order: 1886. It’s also been confirmed that, wait for it… Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development for next gen, and Final Fantasy XV and XIV will also arrive on the PS4.
Finally, the console price was outlined, and it’ll cost $399 in the US, with the price set at £349 and €399 in the UK and Europe respectively. Have a look at some shots of the new console below.
